Scarlet Witch’s actions in Doctor Strange 2 might have bigger consequences as she could have unleashed a terrifying villain for Phase 5.
Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) has become one of the most powerful and dangerous characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, and her actions in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might have unleashed a terrifying villain for Phase 5. Wanda Maximoff went through a major change following the death of Vision (Paul Bettany) in Avengers: Infinity War, and she channeled her trauma and grief into the creation of Westview in WandaVision, which had horrible consequences as she caught the attention of fellow witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), who wanted to harness Maximoff’s magic.
It didn’t take long for Agatha to realize Wanda was the supposedly mythical Scarlet Witch, and she saw the young witch making her full transformation when she reclaimed her magic from her. Scarlet Witch was seen studying the Darkhold at the end of WandaVision and continued to do so in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she used her power and what she learned from the book to dreamwalk and reunite with her children in other universes, causing multiversal chaos. Scarlet Witch made it to Mount Wundagore and the Darkhold Castle, which she ultimately destroyed along with every copy of the Darkhold in the multiverse, which might have unleashed a horrifying villain for the MCU’s Phase 5: Chthon.

Scarlet Witch Might Have Made Way For Chthon’s Arrival
Chthon is a demonic entity that prophesied the arrival of the Scarlet Witch and built a temple (the Darkhold Castle) at the top of Mount Wundagore. Chthon carved his knowledge into the walls of the castle, which was later transcribed into what became the Darkhold. As mentioned above, at the end of WandaVision, the Darkhold was in Scarlet Witch’s possession, corrupting her as she continued to study and use it, leading to her chaotic decisions in Doctor Strange 2. Once Scarlet Witch realized the power the Darkhold had over her and how much damage she had caused across the multiverse, she destroyed the temple and all copies of the book… but that might have been counterproductive as Scarlet Witch might have unleashed Chthon.
In the comics, Chthon’s plan was to grant chaos magic to an infant child so he could use them as a future vessel. That child was Wanda Maximoff, so Chthon was the one responsible for her powers. Although Chthon did possess Wanda a couple of times, she eventually used the Darkhold against him, sealing him and making his powers hers, though Scarlet Witch warned her allies that Chthon would return if she died. The MCU could follow a similar line as Scarlet Witch, with the destruction of the temple and all copies of the Darkhold, would have put an end to his plans, and he will surely want revenge, with Earth paying the price for Scarlet Witch’s actions.
What Chthon’s Arrival To The MCU Means
Chthon is an entity of unimaginable power as he’s Earth’s first black magician, and as such he has mastery in chaos magic. In addition to that, he has control over every aspect of reality, can send his power out of his dimension when invoked by a spellcaster, has telepathy, and can take over mortal host bodies. Chthon, then, is unlike any other villain the MCU has seen, and he’s even more powerful than Dormammu.
Although Scarlet Witch is, most likely, the only character powerful enough to fight and defeat Chthon, until her return is confirmed, Chthon could come face to face with another powerful and intelligent witch: Agatha Harkness. Agatha is coming back in her own TV series, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which could see her redeeming herself by helping save Earth from Chthon’s power, though it could also take a turn and see Agatha trying to use Chthon’s power for her own benefit. Chthon’s is too powerful to be ignored in the rest of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, and he could be an interesting villain in Phase 5 or beyond.
