The Tom Cruise films Minority Report and Top Gun are leaving Netflix soon
Netflix is about to dump two of the biggest movies ever to star Tom Cruise. According to the streaming update site, What’s on Netflix, the streaming platform is getting rid of Minority Report and Top Gun on April 1, despite the Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick‘s recent box office success. Fans of the Jerry Maguire star will wish it was just an April Fool’s prank, but sadly it’s not.
Both Minority Report and Top Gun are the perfect introductions to Tom Cruise for anyone looking to check out the actor’s filmography for the first time. Both movies do an excellent job of showcasing Cruise’s range as a performer.
Top Gun is an ’80s classic directed by the late Tony Scott of True Romance fame. Gun features Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer in cinema history’s most famous shirtless beach volleyball scene. There’s also a subplot about the airforce and flying fighter jets or something.
Top Gun came out in 1986 and was a star-making role for Cruise. The actor had previously starred in Risky Business and Legend, but his role as Maverick singlehandedly transformed Tom from an actor to a movie star. Netflix subscribers would be wise to check out Top Gun one last time before the Tom Cruise classic disappears, just like Goose halfway through the film.
Minority Report is a 2002 Steven Spielberg film co-starring Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton. Minority Report is a sci-fi thriller based on a story by Philip K. Dick where special police use psychics to arrest criminals before they commit crimes. Tom Cruise plays one of these “thought police” who is framed for murder.
Minority Report, with its theme of punishing someone before they even do anything wrong, is more relevant today than it was 20 years ago. Everyone should see the Tom Cruise classic at least once. It doesn’t take a psychic to know that if you miss your last chance to catch Minority Report on Netflix, you’ll regret it.
Tom Cruise isn’t content to coast on past achievements like Minority Report and Top Gun. The actor is busy with several upcoming projects sure to delight his fans. Cruise will return as the world’s second most famous secret agent, Ethan Hunt, in a pair of new Mission Impossible films titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One and Part Two. Part One is due out later this year, with Part Two following in 2024.
Cruise is also working on a sequel to his 2014 movie Edge of Tomorrow. The sequel is called Live Die Repeat and Repeat and is listed as in development on IMDb. Whether or not Netflix will stream any of these future Tom Cruise projects when they eventually come out remains to be seen.
Netflix is jettisoning several other classics alongside the two Tom Cruise movies. The Adam Sandler comedy Big Daddy is leaving the streamer, as well as Forrest Gump and The Aviator. Netflix will also be removing Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy on April 1. Bad news for Tolkien enthusiasts hoping to rewatch the series before the newly announced Lord of the Rings sequels come out.
