Mohamed Salah insists £85m Liverpool team-mate Darwin Nunez ‘WILL score a lot of goals’ for the club… as he backs the Uruguayan forward to come good after an underwhelming start to his Anfield career

Mohamed Salah has backed his Liverpool team-mate Darwin Nunez to start delivering in front of goal following an underwhelming first six months on Merseyside.

Nunez became Liverpool’s record signing last summer when he arrived from Benfica for £85m, and he scored on his debut in the Community Shield against Manchester City.

The goals have dried up since then, though, with the Uruguayan striker only scoring five times in 16 Premier League outings, and he has not found the net in the top-flight since the World Cup.

the pitch, and expects the 23-year-old to improve his finishing as he continues to settle into life in England.

‘I train with Darwin and I know his style, I know how we like to play, and when we have a counter-attack we just go forward,’ Salah told Sky Sports.

‘We did it a couple of times, against Napoli and also against Manchester City. I know how we play and how he is as a player, and I am sure that he will score a lot of goals, believe me, he will score a lot of goals.’

Nunez impressed in their 2-0 win over Everton, setting up Salah’s opener on the counter-attack

Describing his counter-attacking goal against Everton, Salah added: ‘We had a corner against, but we managed to play a one-two, and I knew that he was going to play the ball into space, so I ran as much as I could, because he is very fast, he is really fast.’

Salah is confident the goals will soon start to flow for his fellow Reds attacker

Nunez’s campaign has also been disrupted by suspension following a red card on his Anfield debut against Crystal Palace in August, as well as a couple of injury setbacks.

He will now hope those issues are behind him as Liverpool head into a crucial period in their season, with the team looking to get themselves back into the race for the top four.
