Wednesday star Jenna Ortega wants the Netflix show’s second season to focus more on her character and less on her romantic relationships.
Wednesday star Jenna Ortega doesn’t want Season 2 to focus too much on the character’s romantic relationships.
Speaking to Variety, Ortega said that while she doesn’t have any information about the upcoming season of Wednesday in terms of story details or a production start, the writers’ room is “very fresh.” Ortega added that she’d like to see Season 2 “just focus on her and her experiences” and less on love triangles, which she added “was a weird thing to justify.”
Wednesday was officially renewed for a second season by Netflix in January. Prior to the show’s renewal, series creators Al Gough and Miles Millar teased potential storylines for Season 2 should the series receive the green light from Netflix. “The series is really about a girl who sees the world in black and white, and learning there are shades of gray,” Gough said. “I think like any relationship or any friendship, it can get complicated by other factors. It’s never going to be smooth sailing. And it’s really her learning to navigate the ups and downs of friendship.”
Possible Storylines for Wednesday Season 2
The first season of Wednesday focused in part on a love triangle between Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White) and Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan), who was later revealed to be one of the show’s main antagonists. Ortega’s co-star Emma Myers, who portrays Enid Sinclair, spoke about possible storylines in Season 2, including a potential romance between her character and Wednesday.

“Anything is possible in the show,” she said. “We haven’t really spoken about direction at all, so I don’t really know what the game plan is for anything. As far as love interests go for Wednesday, I feel like at least for a second season, she needs to take her season of singleness. She just had a whole fiasco with her men, she’s got to lay it off for a little bit. I would be deterred from dating anybody if I had gone through that.”
Wednesday is a live-action supernatural mystery series directed by Tim Burton that follows the eponymous Wednesday through her years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday follows the titular Addams as she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, stop a monstrous killing spree terrorizing the local town of Jericho and solve a 25-year-old mystery. The show premiered on Netflix in November to generally positive reviews, with most fans and critics praising Ortega’s performance. The series marked the second-biggest premiere in Netflix’s history with over 6 billion minutes viewed in its first week on the platform, coming second to Season 4 of Stranger Things.
The first season of Wednesday is currently available to stream on Netflix. Season 2 does not yet have a release date.
