” Set up an epic battle in Avengers”: Kang Killing Thor In Avengers 5 Would Be Even Better After New Reveal

Clips from Ant-Man 3 reveal that Kang the Conqueror has already defeated the Avengers, which sets up an epic battle in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Recent clips from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have revealed that Kang the Conqueror has already defeated a version of Thor, which could make their battle in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty even more powerful. As the first project of the MCU’s Phase 5, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will kick off the next chapter of the Multiverse Saga by introducing a warrior variant of Kang the Conqueror and pitting Scott Lang and his size-changing team against Marvel Studios’ newest major villain. Quantumania won’t be the typical post-Avengers palate cleanser, so some huge reveals and intense Quantum Realm adventures can be expected in the upcoming project.

Since Jonathan Majors was confirmed to be returning as Kang the Conqueror, a variant of He Who Remains from Loki, in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, there have been doubts regarding Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) ability to match Kang’s power in battle. Trailers for the upcoming project have revealed that Kang has defeated various incarnations of the Avengers before, hinting at him being a much more formidable threat than first expected, and one recent clip from Quantumania sees Kang gloating about killing Thor. Kang is set to pose a remarkable threat to the Avengers during Phases 5 and 6, leading to some epic battles in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania sees Kang the Conqueror bragging about killing so many Avengers that they blur into one, but until this is actually seen on screen, it could simply be big-talk from the multiversal villain. The Avengers are set to go toe-to-toe with Kang the Conqueror in Phase 6’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which will surely include a battle between Kang and Thor (Chris Hemsworth), who was last seen in Thor: Love & Thunder. The primary version of Thor in the MCU has been shown to have incredible abilities that have only grown over the years, which could make Kang look even stronger if his bragging becomes reality.

The fact that Kang the Conqueror reveals in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania that he has already killed a version of Thor could rob a battle between the pair in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty of its impact. This is especially true as many could argue that the 616-universe’s Thor variant could be the most powerful in the multiverse. However, if Kang the Conqueror actually follows through with his claims of killing Avengers and defeating Thor, this could give the villain more gravitas, and bring weight to his brags, making him seem even more powerful and an even more difficult adversary to eliminate.

Since the development of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was officially announced at 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con, it’s been known that Kang the Conqueror would be battling the Avengers as a collective in the MCU’s Phase 6. However, the fact that Kang has name-dropped Thor specifically as one of the Avengers he’s vanquished means that this statement now needs some payoff, ideally in a battle between Kang the Conqueror and Thor alone. Thor: Love & Thunder felt like the perfect end for Thor, but the reveal that the God of Thunder will return in future MCU projects means that Thor has at least one more fight in him.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in November 2022, Chris Hemsworth mentioned that he’d be open to returning as Thor, but that, “[he feels] like [they’d] probably have to close the book if [he] ever did it again,” suggesting that Thor’s next adventure will be his last. While this could come in a sequel to Thor: Love & Thunder, making Thor the only original Avenger with five solo flicks, it would be fantastic to see Thor team up once again as part of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. This all points to Thor’s death at the hands of Kang the Conqueror, giving more weight to Kang’s claims in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The idea that a one-on-one battle between Thor and Kang the Conqueror could be on the cards in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty poses the interesting question of whether Thor could actually defeat the multiversal villain. Thor’s power in the MCU has grown significantly in each project he’s appeared in, with Thor: Ragnarok massively expanding his power-level and Avengers: Infinity War equipping him with a remarkable new weapon. The fact that Thor has been able to hold his own against previous villains such as an Infinity Stone-equipped Malekith, Hela, the Goddess of Death, and the Mad Titan, Thanos, perhaps suggests that Thor would be an even match for Kang the Conqueror.

Even though the 616-universe’s variant of Thor might harbor enough power to take on Kang the Conqueror by himself, Hemsworth’s comments about potentially retiring the role suggest that Kang would, in fact, overpower the Asgardian. Kang’s comments in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, referring to Thor as “the one with the hammer,” suggest that he’s battled versions of Thor that haven’t reached their full potential, so the battle between the main MCU continuity’s Thor and Kang the Conqueror in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty would certainly be something extraordinary, and perhaps the perfect end to Hemsworth’s career as Thor in the MCU.
