After being carried five miles out to sea by a strong current, an elephant drowned in the Indian Ocean. The elephant was rescued from the ocean after a 12-hour rescue mission by Sri Lankan sailors. Elephants are renowned to be strong swimmers, but after being trapped and treading water for so long, this poor fellow grew weary.
The lengthy rescue began when the navy noticed the elephant struggling to keep his trunk above water.
They didn’t think twice about assisting him since they realized they had to move immediately if they wanted to save him. Navy divers and wildlife officers approached the distraught elephant and surrounded him with ropes.
They then worked together to tow him back to the coast in a gentle manner. They ultimately released him back into the wild after evaluating him and giving him a clean bill of health.
The navy believes the elephant was carried out to sea when swimming over the Kokkilai lagoon, a large stretch of water between two forest regions that elephants use as a shortcut.
Thankfully, the navy was on the lookout and discovered the unfortunate elephant before he drowned. The rescue wasn’t easy, but the divers didn’t give up until he was safely rescued.
Thank you very much to the Sri Lankan navy for rescuing this wounded elephant!
