The John Wick franchise had the perfect female spinoff set up in the first movie, as Adrianne Palicki’s Ms. Perkins should have returned.
The John Wick franchise already set up the perfect female spinoff in the first movie. Keanu Reeves’ action franchise has grown from being a small-scale vehicle for the movie star to becoming a major franchise for Lionsgate. The success of the first John Wick allowed the studio to explore plans for more movies starring Reeves. The film’s continued popularity has even given way to more movies after the completion of the first trilogy, as well as spinoffs and prequels. A prequel show based around The Continental and a female spinoff starring Ana de Armas are a few of the ways the franchise has looked to grow.
The evolution of the John Wick franchise is quite remarkable considering where it all started. The first John Wick had a very small budget and was not even that big of a box office success. However, the movie continued to earn a cult hit status that helped Lionsgate see the potential of giving audiences more adventures in this universe. This will include revealing more about Winston’s past in The Continental show, while multiple franchise characters are returning for Ballerina. For all the efforts made to expand the franchise, the first John Wick set up the perfect female spinoff.
Adrianne Palicki’s Ms. Perkins Needed A John Wick Spinoff
The first John Wick female spinoff movie could have gone to Adrianne Palicki’s character from the first movie, Ms. Perkins. She played a supporting role in the film as a fellow assassin stationed at The Continental at the same time as John Wick. While it appeared that Perkins and Wick were friendly with each other, she quickly turned on him when a $2 million bounty was placed on his head. Palicki’s Ms. Perkins offers to kill John Wick while on Continental grounds and takes part in a very memorable action sequence. Her John Wick character proved to be fearless, skilled, and quite mysterious, but she died in the fight.
It still would have been possible for Lionsgate to make a John Wick prequel starring Adrianne Palicki’s Ms. Perkins. The role came at a time when Palicki was exploring more action-oriented roles, landing her roles in Red Dawn, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and eventually Agents of SHIELD. Her rising profile would have made a John Wick female spinoff starring Ms. Perkins a worthwhile shot to expand the franchise. It could have been made with a relatively small budget and revealed more about a standout character from the first movie.
It’s Too Late Now For A Ms. Perkins John Wick Spinoff
The potential that a Ms. Perkins John Wick spinoff prequel movie starring Adrianne Palicki might have been great, but the concept has been wasted now. It has been nearly a decade since audiences last saw Palicki in the John Wick universe. She could still be interested in reprising the role, but the reality is that too much time has passed for this return to be realistic. A Ms. Perkins prequel also would likely not fit with the current plans for the franchise’s future.
John Wick has moved beyond a Ms. Perkins spinoff to tell a different female-led prequel story instead. Ballerina stars Ana de Armas as a female assassin and takes place between the events of John Wick 3 and John Wick 4. This movie will directly tie into the larger franchise by using familiar characters and likely influencing stories that are still coming. A potential Ms. Perkins John Wick spinoff movie could have featured known characters too, but there is no reason why Adrianne Palicki’s character would need to play a central role in the worldbuilding at this stage.
