Jose Mourinho has alerted Chelsea that he wants to take on the job as their manager for a third time.
However, Stamford Bridge chiefs are happy with Graham Potter and have made it clear they will stand by their current coach despite a tough season.
Roma boss Mourinho is keen on a return to London, where his wife and children still live, report the Daily Mail.
And his representatives have been in contact with Chelsea and let it be known that his preferred scenario would be returning to the west London outfit for a third time in his career.
Under the Portuguese coach’s guidance, the Blues have won three Premier League titles across two spells, as well as three League Cups and one FA Cup.
However, despite being the club’s most successful coach, both times he was sacked amid acrimonious circumstances with reports that he fell out with players and board members alike.
Mourinho also damaged his reputation with the Chelsea fans when he agreed to become the manager of Manchester United and then Tottenham, two of the club’s biggest rivals.
Nevertheless, the 60-year-old is keen on a return to London to be closer to his family while he has also grown frustrated at Roma due to their reluctance to spend big on players.
The Italian side currently sit fifth in Serie A but seem unable to break past that ceiling and earn a Champions League spot.
But Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has stuck by Potter at the club in a difficult season where the Blues lanquish in 10th in the Premier League.
The American billionaire, who bought the club off Roman Abramovich last year, has spent over £500million on transfers across two windows, including on Wesley Fofana, Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk.
Mourinho wants to be back competing for the biggest prizes and believes he could do so with Boehly’s free-spending attitude.
And he does not reckon that is possible with Roma, though he did win the first-ever Europa Conference League trophy last season after beating Feyenoord in the final.
It remains to be seen whether Mourinho would consider joining another London club with the Stamford Bridge doors slammed shut while David Moyes continues to fight for his job at West Ham.
The Hammers had been linked with the former Real Madrid manager before, while a return to Tottenham, where Antonio Conte is out of contract at the end of the season, would be extremely unlikely.
