Andy Robertson admitted Liverpool are getting worse as their dreadful season continued with a stoppage-time defeat at Brighton in the FA Cup.
Kaoru Mitoma scored a sensational late winner as Albion came from behind to beat the holders 2-1 and reach the fifth round.
Harvey Elliott had put Liverpool in front, only for Brighton to equalise when Lewis Dunk diverted Tariq Lamptey’s long-range shot in.
It means Liverpool have won only one of six games in 2023 and Robertson said: ‘This season has been nowhere near good enough. At the start of the year we wanted a fresh start but that hasn’t happened. We’ve been worse.
‘In the league we haven’t been good enough and now we are out of both cups. You can’t put your finger on one thing, it’s more than that.’ Brighton beat Liverpool 3-0 earlier this month in what Jurgen Klopp called the worst performance of his tenure, and the manager bizarrely claimed yesterday’s defeat was a sign of progress.
‘We made a step in the right direction but nobody wants to hear that any more,’ he said. ‘There’s no other way than to fight through it. We have to improve and the body language from a couple of the boys has to be much better.’
