Even as reports continue to suggest that Lionel Messi has verbally agreed a new contract with PSG and will remain in France beyond the current season, Gerard Romero insists that nothing is sealed on that front as of yet.
Indeed, last week, the journalist claimed that the Argentine superstar was not close to renewing his contract with Les Parisiens and is considering his options after having won the FIFA World Cup.
Now, Romero has once again given an update on the situation and future of Messi, stating that the 35-year-old has still not signed a new contract with PSG, while also adding that a return to Barcelona remains an option for the global superstar.
Messi left Barça in the summer of 2021 after the club were not in a position to renew his contract due to financial problems. Having joined PSG on a free transfer, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is thriving in France, although he made a slow start to life.
Messi’s current contract runs out in the summer and reports suggest that the 35-year-old already has an agreement in principle with PSG, that will see him continue at the club for at least one more year.
Romero, however, insists that the situation is not as advanced as it seems and Messi is still yet to commit to a new contract with PSG. Instead, a return to Barcelona remains an option, along with a possible switch to the MLS or even Argentina.
The journalist even goes on to add that Barça boss Xavi is ready for the scenario of Messi returning to the club.
It has previously been suggested that the manager has a tactical blueprint in mind if his former teammate ends up coming back to Camp Nou in the summer.
Given the club’s Financial Fair Play situation, it is hard to imagine how the Catalans could fit Messi’s salary onto the wage bill, at a time when La Liga is telling them to trim it by at least €150-200 million.
